The commission made a preliminary recommendation recently todesignate the 1.1-million-sf building, which cost less than $6million to build, a Chicago landmark. The proposal will get furtherreview from the department of planning and development and consentof the current owners will be sought.

In addition to the exterior of the building, the commissionbelieves the main lobby on the ground floor as well as exhibitionhall, executive offices and library on the eighth floor ought to bepreserved.
