09/10/03: According to the Institute of SupplyManagement, productivity increased for the second straight month inAugust. This is a terrific indicator of economic growth from both amanagement and production standpoint. Of course, employees may havea totally different point of view. We're entering a phase of thisrecovery where we're expecting an ever-increasing number of hoursfrom a workforce that is already stretched thin. The challengingpart of this trend is how does one motivate a workforce that isneither expanding nor receiving wage increases? Soon it won't begood enough to say, "Well, at least you have a job." As theeconomic engine begins to rumble stronger and payrolls do expand, the competition for qualified employees will rev up. Are you readyto pay the price?
