PHILADELPHIA-Dallas-based Wyndham International will undertake a $7.5-million renovation of Wyndham Philadelphia at Franklin Plaza. Upgrades are planned for every area of the 758-room hotel. Meeting rooms will also be revamped to increase their flexibility and number of breakout options.

The 26-story, contemporary-style hotel at North 17th and Race Streets was built in 1980 and renovated in 1998. It stands four blocks from the Pennsylvania Convention Center and is one of the city’s largest convention hotels. It currently has 55,000 sf of meeting and exhibit space on two levels, including a 20,000-sf ballroom.

The renovation will encompass all guestrooms and baths, corridors, the lobby and both restaurants. Guestrooms will have new carpeting and newly upholstered furniture. Granite countertops, marble flooring and new sinks and tubs will be installed in guestroom baths. New carpeting and wall coverings will be installed in all corridors.

Guestroom and hallway renovations will begin one floor at a time. The first floor is scheduled for completion by Jan. 30, 2004, and subsequent floors will be completed every two weeks after that date.

The lobby will be fitted with new furniture and area rugs, and an oak bar will be installed in the Terrace Cafe. Earlier renovations added high-speed Internet access in all guestrooms and wireless capabilities throughout the meeting and public spaces.

The upcoming renovation, says Kevin Molloy, general manager of the hotel, “will complement the hotel’s existing amenities . . . and help the hotel regain a competitive edge among meeting space in the city.” It comes at a time when the overall hotel industry here is suffering occupancy rates of less than 65%, according to published reports.
