Beginning June 1, anyone under age 18 will need an escort aged21 or older to do business in the mall after 5 p.m. It's a movemall officials say is not discrimatory, but rather needed toprotect other customers who want to shop in peace.
"It's recognition of the rights of our richly diverse customerbase, those people who want to shop without being inconvenienced,"Fairlane manager Catherine O'Malley says.
Merchants have long complained that evening customers were beingdriven away by rude, unruly, loud teens that weren't there to shop."We recognize and appreciate young customers, but we have triedmany things and we have researched the issue. We feel this policyis fair," O'Malley says.
