Chrysler declines to say how much money it was investing in theoverhaul of the 13-year old plant, but did say it would be retooledto allow the plant to assemble more than one make of vehicle at atime. Similar plant overhauls in recent years for Chrysler andother major automakers have easily exceeded $100 million. Since theplant opened, it has focused exclusively on the Jeep GrandCherokee, a popular seller for DCX. The Grand Cherokee is beingredesigned and the new version of the vehicle is to be launchedlater this year.

Most of the plant's 2,700 workers will be on temporary lay-offduring the work, with all of them expected to be called back bylate July, Chrysler says. Jefferson North's production capacitywill remain unchanged after the work at 350,000 vehiclesannually.
