SOUTHFIELD, MI-Shopping mall magnate A. Alfred Taubman is donating $4 million to a university he once attended to help finance the building of a new student services center on the campus of the 5,000-student private school, Lawrence Tech President Charles M. Chambers says.

Groundbreaking for the building, to be named in Taubman’s honor, is planned for later this year. The three-story 38,000 sf center will cost $9.6 million and sit at the hub of Lawrence Tech’s 120-acre campus in Southfield.

“Just as Mr. Taubman redefined the shopping experience for millions of Americans through innovative merchandising and retail design, our new Student Services Center will redefine the student experience at Lawrence Tech,” Chambers says.

Lawrence Tech will consolidate all services that support students–from admissions through career services and placement–now spread throughout the campus, into a one-stop center planned to strengthen the university’s retention and service initiatives.

Taubman, who studied architecture at Lawrence Tech in the evenings while starting his real estate business, was the type of student the new center is designed to help, Chambers adds.

Other universities with programs and facilities named for Taubman include Harvard University, Brown University, and the University of Michigan. He is founder of Taubman Centers, which owns and manages more than 30 upscale regional shopping centers.
