Granholm has been pushing the Cool Cities iniative, which aimsto make Michigan more attractive to young college graduates, manyof whom are leaving the state to start careers and families. Nearly43,000 young, single, college-educated people left Michigan from1995 to 2000, according to the governor.

In addition to the $100,000 grants, the program gives groupseasier access to other state grants that can be used by cities andcommunities for revitalization projects.
