Situated on a 20-acre parcel at the intersection of SouthernAve. and Benning Rd., most of the former Eastgate Gardens housingfacility was razed about six years ago. Now, plans for themultifamily property's reincarnation consist of the development of269 mixed-income housing units that will include 61 rentalapartments, 108 home ownership units, and a 100-unit residentialsegment dedicated to seniors. The larger plan for an extendedEastgate Gardens community involves an expansion to encompass 250acres that could include a school, among other mixed-useofferings.

"Marshall Heights is on the verge of a renaissance," DCHAexecutive director Michael Kelly says. "Now, with the approval ofthe Eastgate HOPE VI plan, it has the resources it needs to realizeits potential." Groundbreaking for the new residential developmentis expected to take place by the end of this year.
