Matzel & Mumford, a K. Hovnanian company, has hired theWestmont, IL-based environmental firm Entact to remediate the site,which was used by GAF Corp. until 1983 for the manufacture ofasphalt and asbestos roofing shingles. The property, which frontsthe historic Delaware and Raritan Canal, has housed a variety ofmanufacturing operations since the 1880s. "The redevelopment willallow residents near-complete access to the canal for the firsttime in nearly a century," says Roger Mumford, president of Matzel& Mumford.

Under a timeline laid out by the developer, Entact has begunremoving asbestos from the site and expects to spend the rest ofthe summer razing some 250,000 sf of vacant structures andfoundations. Soil remediation will start in late summer, and workwill start in early fall on 1,000 linear feet of bio-engineeredretaining wall on the canal banks.
