$16M Community Swim Center Gets Under Way

GERMANTOWN, MD-Work has gotten under way for the new three-pool Indoor Aquatic center at the sprawling 690-acre South Germantown Recreational Park. The 60,000-sf swim facility will be in good company, as it is being developed as part of the park’s 162-acre Maryland SoccerPlex–a site that is home to 20 soccer fields, a 40-acre central park, and the 66,000-sf Discover Sports Center. Like the park itself, the project is a development of the public-private partnership involving the Maryland National Capital Park & Planning Commission and the Maryland Soccer Foundation. Forrester Construction Co. is handling the building activity for the endeavor.

“Almost five years ago when we broke ground for the SoccerPlex at this site, we envisioned a facility that would benefit all recreational enthusiasts in the County,” Montgomery County Executive Douglas M. Duncan says. “With the construction now underway on the indoor swim facility, that vision is one step closer to becoming a reality.” The Hughes Group Architects-designed facility is expected to reach completion in the fall of 2005.
