07/14/04: There has been speculation about if President Bushshould replace Vice President Dick Cheney before the upcomingelection. This was spurred by talk by former Republican NewYork Senator Al D’Amato (for the record, he is not a RockefellerRepublican, but a consistent conservative voice). Aside from thepolitical calculus, punditry and prognosticating, what kind ofleadership will be displayed by the country’s top CEO concerningthis issue? George W. Bush is the only president to haveearned an MBA, from Harvard nevertheless. What kind ofmanagement lessons did he bring away from Cambridge,MA? Ultimately, it doesn't matter. Either choice—for oragainst Cheney—is a no-win for Bush. The Vice President ofthe United States is the second most important person in the chainof command, and how can one simply say, “Its time to go,” withoutthere being far-reaching consequences? It may be better toabandon the political calculations and leave things as they are forthe sake of the Union.
