DOVER, MA-Boston College was the winning bidder for the 78.5-acre St. Stephen’s Priory site here. A source close to the deal tells GlobeSt.com the site sold for approximately $16.5 million. The college intends to use the priory as a retreat and conference center.

Situated along the Charles River, the property, which was acquired by the Dominican Fathers in 1951, includes a total of 68,792 sf of buildings. It will continue to operate as a religious retreat until its closing in September. Boston-based Meredith & Grew represented the Dominican Fathers.

“St. Stephen’s Priory will be a much-welcomed retreat/conference center for our students, faculty, staff and alumni,” says William P. Leahy, SJ, president of Boston College.

In April, the Archdiocese of Boston agreed to sell Boston College part of its campus in Brighton, which is adjacent to the college, in a deal that will ultimately cost $107 million. That transaction involves 43 acres including the former archbishop’s residence. Boston College will pay $99.4 million for the site. The Archdiocese has also agreed to sell the Catholic college the three-acre Lake Street Tribunal property in two years for $8 million.
