It will be built next to the Detroit Medical Center's HarperUniversity Hospital. About a year ago, Karmanos began exploring theprocess of splitting off from the nonprofit DMC. The move isdescribed by both sides as "amicable."

The moves mean that Karmanos "goes from being a DMC subsidiaryto DMC's full and equal partner," says Karmanos chief executive Dr.John Ruckdeschel. Karmanos spent $105 million in the 1990s torenovate inpatient floors at Harper, where it manages cancer carefor the Detroit Medical Center.

As a stand-alone cancer center, Karmanos expects to attractadditional government funds and private donations. Karmanos'hospital now sees about 10,000 new cancer patients yearly, andresearchers there are working on more than 300 clinical cancerstudies.
