WAUKEGAN, IL-Work begins next month at the 40 acres along the lakefront formerly owned by North Shore Gas and General Motors, one the first steps in the $1-billion redevelopment of 400 acres in this far north suburb. Cost of the environmental remediation, which includes removing 31,000 cubic yards of contaminated soil, will cost up to $10 million and will be paid by the former owners of the Waukegan Manufactured Gas and Coke plant site.

Meanwhile, the recently renovated Genesee Theatre in Downtown Waukegan will open Dec. 3, with comedian Bill Cosby performing. Residential redevelopment is expected to begin within the next 12 months, with building moving south within the next two years, and north within the next five years.

The Downtown redevelopment will ultimately add 4,000 homes and 1 million sf of retail and entertainment space. A marina also will be improved and changes will be made to make the Metra commuter station more accessible to pedestrians.
