BLOOMINGTON, MN-Cub Foods recently opened a 73,000-sf grocery, replacing an existing store in Applewood Pointe, a mixed-use project being developed by United Properties at 84th Street and Lyndale Avenue. The city has long had its eye on redeveloping the 13 acres at 84th Street and Lyndale Avenue.

United Properties, a locally based commercial real estate firm, assembled the land, won city approvals and demolished a vacant 100,000-sf former home improvement store building. In addition to the 73,000-sf Cub Foods store, United will also build an 11,000-sf retail building for convenience stores such as a drug store, liquor store, service center and TCF bank branch.

Cub is moving from a store housed in a building that was once a Holiday Superstore, which will be torn down to make room for the three-story residential project–50 townhomes and a 75-unit senior co-op–which will be subsidized by the city through tax increment financing. The townhomes will range in cost from $160,000 to $210,000.

Applewood Pointe, United’s fourth such project in the Twin Cities, will provide seniors living in the area with an opportunity to stay in their community, says Brian Carey, vice president of development at United Properties. Cub Foods is owned by SuperValu, a large grocery wholesaler and retailer based in the Twin Cities.
