GREEN BAY, WI-Multi-department retailer ShopKo Stores is wrapping up the renovation of seven units in the next week in Midwestern and Western states. When completed on Nov. 6, the company will have renovated 10 stores for the year at a cost of $22 million.

The 10 is up from the three stores that ShopKo renovated last year, and the company could make changes at up to 20 of the 140 full-line stores it operates in 15 states, a spokesman says. ShopKo also operates 220 of its smaller-format Pamida stores in small markets and one ShopKo Express drugstore.

ShopKo has not released store expansion plans for its full-line stores, but the company intends to open two more drugstores in January, the spokesman says. ShopKo has not opened any new full-line stores this year.

The renovations include the widening of aisles, the addition of warmer green and yellow paint and new lighting. “Our goal is to establish a less clinical, more residential environment through the creative use of color and materials,” says Sam Duncan, the company’s president and CEO, in a statement.

ShopKo’s same-store sales in September were down 1.2% year-over-year. The company, based here, opened its first store in 1962.
