CHICAGO-Two more planned manufacturing districts are expected to be created on the city’s Southwest Side, which would preserve 1,000 acres for industrial use by prohibiting residential units, and new homeowners who may find the established operations objectionable. The two new districts include 900 acres bounded by Cicero Avenue, Conrail railroad tracks, Marquette Road and 79th Street, where 60 companies have operations employing 5,500.

Among the companies in the proposed Greater Southwest Industrial PMD are Kraft/Nabisco Biscuit Co.; Tootsie Roll Industries; Cupid Candies; and Morand Beverage Co. Although it only includes 120 acres, the proposed Harlem PMD is home to 45 companies employing 1,600. GE Mathis Co.; Hinckley Springs; International Paper; Prism Corp.; Spring Air Midwest; and Thompson Steel Polishing Co. are among those who have long set up shop.

The city council is reviewing the two planned manufacturing districts, giving the city 14, which were proposed by Mayor Richard M. Daley.
