12/15/04: When a Japanese company purchased Rockefeller Center almost 20 years ago, there was dismay, panic and a host of other emotions expressed in the name of keeping America sovereign and free. So what happens when IBM sells out its PC business to a Chinese conglomerate? Not much. There was a day or two of media coverage, some op-ed pieces and the fuss was over. But what does it all mean? It’s apparent that the much-touted global economy is a reality. The idea that a foreign government-sponsored corporation can come in and purchase a division from one of America’s mainstay companies without even raising much of an eyebrow shows that the melding of cultures and business has actually gone very far. Now, what does it say about the investment? Well, if the Rockefeller Center deal is any indication about selling out at the right time, IBM may be back in the PC business before you know it.
