WASHINGTON, DC-The public has gotten its first visual of the new baseball stadium that will be developed for the Washington Nationals now that renderings of the one-million-sf ballpark have made their debut. City officials revealed the plans for the $611-million stadium, which was designed by the architectural firms of HOK Sport, a division of Hellmuth, Obata and Kassabaum Inc., and Devrouax & Purnell Architects.

Fronting the Anacostia Waterfront, the facility will be constructed of glass, natural stone, steel and concrete, and will contain 41,000 stadium seats, as well as such amenities as a restaurant and sports bar, picnic area and family plaza. Additionally, the structure will be the first LEED certified environmentally friendly baseball stadium in the nation.

“This unveiling tells us that we’ll have the innovation of modern ballpark design for the fans and an anchor building in a reclaimed part of town that updates the city’s monumental architecture for the 21st century,” says Bob Peck, former president of the Greater Washington Board of Trade. News of the baseball stadium’s development a few years ago began a race among developers to acquire surrounding land in the long neglected–but slated for revitalization–Anacostia Waterfront area. The ballpark is scheduled for a 2008 delivery.
