BOSTON-An expansion project for Boston’s North Station will more than double the size of the rail station’s concourse. It will create an enlarged waiting area and add food vendors and services to the transit hub.

The 20,000-sf, multimillion dollar project is set to be completed by November. It will be paid for by the Delaware North Cos.-Boston, which owns and operates the TD Banknorth Garden, the venue for the Boston Celtics and Bruins, located over North Station.

“As a direct result of comments received from many of the thousands of daily commuter rail customers who use North Station, the expansion and renovation plans have been put on a fast track,” says Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority general manager Daniel Grabauskas. Many passengers have complained about the station’s crowded conditions, officials note.

Among the changes planned are improved crowd control measures designed to separate passengers from individuals attending Garden events. A large, overhead electronic board with schedule and track information will also be added to the concourse.

Although the MBTA, which operates the station, says there will be some disruption during the project, temporary walkways will be built to accommodate passengers. The Causeway Street station serves nearly 50,000 passengers on an average weekday with five commuter rail lines and Amtrak train service to New Hampshire and Maine.
