BOSTON-Three Bay State colleges could benefit if the state legislature approves an economic stimulus bill that will provide funding to help build biotech and research facilities on their campuses. The vote will take place today.

If approved, the legislation will give the University of Massachusetts at Lowell $21 million to build a nano-technology and biotechnology-manufacturing building and allow the state to issue bonds for $14 million more for the facility. The school will raise another $45 million through a $35-million bond issue and $10 million in private funding. The $80-million facility has not yet been designed.

The bill also seeks $10 million to fund the bonding of a bioprocessing facility for the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth campus. An additional $5 million would go toward turning a cafeteria at the University of Massachusetts-Boston into a Venture Development Center that will work with businesses and research institutions to develop commercial services and goods.
