MEDFORD, MA-One of the area’s largest fitness and health clubs will be built at the Station Landing mixed-use development in Medford when Boston Sports Club breaks ground on a three-story, 50,000 sf flagship location.

The facility is part of a $500-million, one-million-sf mixed-use project now under construction by Newton, MA-based National Development near the MBTA’s Orange Line station at Wellington Circle in Medford. The build-to-suit sports club, which is among several tenants that have recently signed on to be part of the project, will offer a pool, group exercise studios, a mind-body studio, a spinning studio, strength training equipment, cardiovascular machines, massage and baby sitting services. Construction on the health and fitness club will begin later this year with completion slated for late 2007 or early 2008.

“It was important to the Station Landing concept to offer the excitement of one of the best health and fitness clubs in the Boston area,” says Ted Tye, managing partner of National Development, noting that the development firm has been working for more than a year to bring the health club to the transit-oriented project. The transaction was arranged for the tenant by Robert P. Fitzgerald Jr., with NAI Hunneman Commercial’s Boston office.

The Wellington Station project, one of two transit-oriented developments currently under construction by National Development in the Greater Boston area, will include housing, retail and commercial space as well as a hotel.

The company is also building Arborpoint at Woodland Station, a a 180-unit apartment complex on the site of a former commuter parking lot at the Woodland MBTA station in Newton.
