ATLANTIC CITY, NJ-Construction is under way for a new 40-story, 786-room hotel tower being added to the existing Trump Taj Mahal hotel/casino here. The addition will boost the property, which currently has 1,250 guest rooms, past the 2,000-room mark. Plans for the expansion were reported by in March.

“The new hotel tower is planned to greatly increase our guest capacity at the Taj Mahal,” says Mark Juliano, COO of Trump Entertainment Resorts Inc. “As we renovate the casino floor and develop more dining and retail options at the Taj Mahal, these rooms will serve as a critical component of our plan to expand our business and attract more customers.”

To date, Trump has spent $110 million for those renovations, which besides the Taj Mahal also include the Trump Plaza Casino. Company officials also say they’re currently developing a renovation master plan for the Trump Marina Casino as well.

“We believe that expanding our guest room inventory in Atlantic City is an important part of our overall plan to capitalize on the changing and growing gaming marketplace,” says James B. Perry, Trump Entertainment’s CEO. “As Atlantic City transforms into a destination market for customers, our expansion and renovation plan is being specifically tailored to create new entertainment options, increase the quality of the experience at Trump properties and increase value for shareholders.”

The new tower, which will rise 450 feet, will include 716 standard guest rooms and 70 suites when completed in the summer of 2008. The primary architect on the project is the Friedmutter Group of Las Vegas and Atlantic City.
