BEAVERTON, OR-The Beaverton City Council this week unanimously rejected plans for to build a Wal-Mart on a 9.3-acre site between Highway 26 and Barnes Road at Southwest Cedar Hills Boulevard. The retailer wants to build a 152,300-sf store on the property.

The city annexed the property in early 2005. The base zoning it inherited doesn’t preclude a proposal such as Wal-Mart, but the site also came with a transit-oriented designation because it is about one-half mile from the Sunset Transit Center. In rejecting the plan, council members cited the potential for a dangerous intersection and an incompatibility with transit goals.

If Wal-Mart appeals the decision, it would go to the Oregon Land Use Board of Appeals. Wal-Mart has 21 days to decide once the council approves its formal findings, which is expected to occur on Aug. 14.

Wal-Mart does not yet have a store in Washington County, but may be getting close in the City of Cornelius, where it has received approval for a 204,000sf store on North Adair Street. Opponents The state Land Use Board of Appeals is scheduled to decide an appeal of the approval later this month.
