NEW YORK CITY-At a news conference today, Gov. Eliot Spitzer offered his support for the construction of the Freedom Tower to be built at Ground Zero. Before taking office, Spitzer dubbed the 1,776-sf office project a “white elephant” and questioned the ability to finance the $2.4-billion project.

“It is clear that after long delay this project–while it may not have been the one we would have designed–must be built and we must get moving,” says Spitzer in a statement.

The Freedom Tower is being developed by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, a move that was solidified in September, as reported by The PA agreed to control the building, making Silverstein the hired contractor for the facility. The Freedom Tower broke ground last April. A number of government organizations have agreed to lease a significant amount of space in the facility.

The governor and Mayor Michael Bloomberg are meeting today to discuss funding for the project.

Developer Larry Silverstein, who is developing several World Trade Center Towers, has managed to sign on several prominent businesses to take space in the almost complete 7 WTC. As of the end of December, the building was 60% leased to a variety of tenants including Darby & Darby PC, Moody’s Investors Service and the New York Academy of Sciences. Most recently, ABN Amro Inc. took 140,000 sf, of the one-million-sf building.
