Town officials also hope that such a designation would pave theway for eventual redevelopment plans for the community's two maincommercial areas, specifically downtown and the corridor formed byState Route 36 along the community's southern border. Thedesignation would fall short of a full area in need ofredevelopment designation, but local officials say they see it as astep in that direction.

According to Mayor Robert Bergen, if area in need ofrehabilitation designation is obtained, the next step would be toorganize a series of public meetings to gather input. Initialgoals, according to Bergen, include waterfront improvements, newentrances to the community and streetscape and signageimprovements.
