TUSTIN, CA-The AMC movie theater chain has debuted a new 14-screen, 3,000-seat theater at the one-million-sf District at Tustin Legacy regional shopping and entertainment center. The new venue is the latest in a series of anchors and lead tenants to open at the property, which is the first new regional center to open in Orange County in the last decade.

AMC Tustin 14, the first AMC theater in Tustin and the chain’s fourth location in Orange County, is the entertainment anchor at the District at Tustin Legacy, notes Peter C. Brown, the chairman, chief executive officer and president of AMC Entertainment Inc. Jeffrey Axtell, project director of the regional center for Vestar Development Co., points out that the area surrounding the project provides a plentiful customer base, with more than 1.47 million permanent residents and 930,000 employees living within a 10-mile radius.

The AMC joins Costco, Lowe’s and dozens of other tenants who have made their debut or will soon do so at the District at Tustin Legacy, which is at the corner of Jamboree Rd. and Barranca Pkwy. The center, slated for its grand opening on Aug. 17, is a project of Vestar/Kimco Tustin LP, a joint venture by Vestar Development Co. and Kimco Developers, with Vestar as the center’s developer and its management company.

The open-air lifestyle and entertainment center is part of the larger Tustin Legacy project, a redevelopment of the former Marine Corps Air Station here that will also include office, residential and other types of development. Axtell notes that the retail center will feature walkways and bike paths that will eventually connect it with other components of the Tustin Legacy project.

Another component of the Tustin Legacy project that is expected to get under way soon is the first 340,000 sf of office space at the development. Shea Properties of Aliso Viejo expects to begin construction within the next six months on the first phase of the office space, which will feature an office and R&D campus of two- and three-story buildings along Red Hill and Warner avenues.
