Arno Harris, CEO of Recurrent Energy, cites EPA statisticsshowing that electricity usage is the single largest source ofcarbon emissions for commercial buildings. "By tapping the solarpotential of empty rooftops, owners of large commercial real estateportfolios, such as REITs, have a unique opportunity to quickly andeffectively reduce their greenhouse gas emissions," Harrissays.

Recurrent Energy's research shows that landlords ownapproximately 8.5 billion sf of commercial rooftops nationwide. Ofthis figure, about 5.5 billion sf is considered suitable forphotovoltaic installations because the roofs are flat and free ofshading.
