JERSEY CITY-The struggling Christ Hospital here, already dealingwith a controversial sale to the for-profit Prime HealthcareServices for $15.8 million, could then be sold again to anAlabama-based REIT, reports the Jersey Journal.
Citing documents filed with the state, the Journalreported that the 139-year-old hospital would be sold toBirmingham, AL-based Medical Properties Trust,then leased back for $7 million annually. Prime and ChristHospital have requested that a mandated review be expedited so thefirst sale could close by year-end.
"Christ Hospital will close if this sale is not approved,"president and CEO Peter A. Kelly says in a letteron the hospital’s Web site. Earlier this month, the hospitalannounced layoffs of 50 staff members.
