CHICAGO-A $25 million improvement project to UnionStation in the downtown, designed to bring back someluster and office tenants to the 87-year-old property, has beencompleted. Mortenson Construction, hired byAmtrak, upgraded and replaced systems that willallow the historic Great Hall and the eight-story office headhouseto gain air conditioning and modern safety features.

Amtrak owns the station, designed by famous architectDaniel Burnham and opened in 1925. Federal fundswere used for the upgrades, which were project managed byJones Lang LaSalle.

The Great Hall, barely used today by the mostly commuter traincustomers, lost air conditioning decades ago. Designs for expandingthe vacant eight-story headhouse have been through a number ofdevelopment announcements, but these plans have nevermaterialized.
