BERKELEY, CAThe University of California,Berkeley, Maximino Martinez Commons has achievedLEED Gold 2009 NC certification. The 147,000-square-foot facilitylocated on a former university parking lot was completed in 2012 ata construction cost of $53 million.

According to Thornton Tomasetti, theinternational engineering firm that provided sustainabilityconsulting services, the building contains a sophomore residencehall and apartments for upper-division students, which providehousing for 416 students in 98 double-occupancy units, fivefive-bedroom suites and 47 four-bedroom suites.

Thornton Tomasetti was retained by the university to manage theLEED certification process, which included providing sustainabilitystrategy recommendations to the design team, tracking compliancewith LEED during design and construction and reviewing andsubmitting documentation to the Green Building CertificationInstitute. The project team comprised architects EHDD and BehnischArchitects; mechanical engineer Acco Engineered Systems; plumbingengineer IBE Consulting; and contractor Vance Brown Inc.
