SAN DIEGO, CA—Balfour Beatty Construction hasbegun construction on a new $11.4 million fitnesscenter building located at San Diego Community CollegeDistrict's Mesa College campus. The design-buildproject will replace the existing fitness facility and provide anew venue for the exercise science and athletic programs, as wellas access to improved fitness amenities for use by all Mesa Collegestudents.

The project scope includes construction of a two-story,27,200-square-foot steel structure to be occupiedby the Mesa College Athletics Department. Programelements include an aerobics studio, weight training room, spinningroom, free weight training lab, athletic training room andtreatment room, cardio fitness training lab, and an office suite.Construction is supported by the demolition and removal of theexisting buildings, and the removal and replacement of siteutilities. Site preparation, new utilities, hardscape, andlandscape elements are also included in the scope of theproject.

The project will incorporate many sustainable features and isexpected to obtain LEED Silver certification fromthe U.S. Green Building Council. The project is expected to becomplete by June 2015.
