IRVINE, CA—While zombie foreclosures—homesactively in the foreclosure process that had been vacated by theirowners—decreased nationwide 23% from a year ago, 16 states sawincreases of zombie foreclosures prior to process completion in Q3,according to a report from RealtyTrac. A total of 117,298zombie foreclosures were reported nationwide last quarter,representing 18% of all active foreclosures, and they will likelyend up as short sales, foreclosure auction salesor bank-owned sales in the future, according to the firm.

The total number of zombie foreclosures reported in Q3 was down17% from 141,406 in the second quarter, the firm reports. For alink to an infographic on this topic, click here.
