WASHINGTON, DC—Skanska has signed a contract tomodernize and expand the Lafayette ElementarySchool. The contract's total value is $72 million, withthe initial phase worth about $21 million.

The school, which is located on 5701 Broad Branch Rd NW, wasbuilt in the 1930s followed by an addition in the 1970s. Theexpansion project will replace the section added in the 1970s plusadd additional square footage, restore the existing schoolhousefaçade, renovate the interior the 1930s structures and make otherchanges, including those necessary to meet the latest DC Departmentof Environment requirements.

The project is designed to achieve LEED Gold certification.Preconstruction began in February 2015 and the projectis slated for completion in November 2016.
