Plans for how to utilize the prime spot in Jefferson City began more than 10 years ago. The prison was then closed in 2004, after 150 years of operation, but still plans remained vague. County officials did not offer an estimated price on the redevelopment.
The plan, which is still in its early stages, calls for 30-acres of private development and preservation initiatives for the historic buildings smattered throughout the property. Portions of the facility, roughly 78 acres, are allotted for state government offices.
A portion of the site will focus on tourism and historic preservation; a museum of the prison's history is in the works. Additionally retail and office projects are likely to go up. A developer or exact plan of how many square feet would be dedicated to what has yet to be released.
The new federal court house building, which is currently being constructed on the site will be completed in 2011.
