Micro Loans or Bust

Last evening, I had dinner with a twenty-something entrepreneur to discuss Web recruiting trends. Surprisingly, our conversation strayed into the world of micro loans, with which I confess I was not that familiar. My dinner guest makes loans to restaurant operators who need a short-term financial float for the summer to cover the weak sales season. These operators will pay premium rates for the bridge loans. In the pre-banking crisis, these $10,000 - $20,000 loans were readily extended to hard-working, credit-worthy small business men and women. Not any more – the spigot is dry. The backbone of our country rests with small business owners and entrepreneurs and now, thanks to the DC bureaucrats and a broken banking system, they are left out to dry when they hit a rough patch and simply need a small bridge loan to tide them over. It's a sorry state of affairs, and all we have heard so far from our candidates are worries over Romney's tax returns and questions whether Obama failed a course or two at Columbia.
