BERKELEY, CA—Initial work has begun on a new building for the University of California, Berkeley Art Museum, adjacent to the campus.
The new museum and film center is being built on Center Street downtown by Plant Construction Co., should be finished in 2015, though it is not expected to open until early 2016, according to a report in the San Francisco Business Times.
It will house both the Berkeley Art Museum and the Pacific Film Archive.
Lawrence Rinder, director of the museum and film center, said $95 million has been raised in a $100 million campaign for the construction.
The new facility will have galleries for the art museum and some classrooms, plus a 230-seat theater and a smaller 32-seat screening room.
BAM/PFA, as the organization is known, was started in 1963. The museum puts on about 15 exhibitions a year and the PFA shows about 380 movies.
