NEW YORK CITY-While the Knicks and Rangers continue to play for their respective sports championships, the arena where they compete continues to have issues with the city that might cause these teams to play elsewhere in the years to come.
At a meeting on Monday, Department of Planning officials proposed granting Madison Square Garden a 15-year special use permit, drastically shorter in term than the 50-year deal the Garden ownership has been seeking, according to Crain's New York Business.
"While Madison Square Garden maintains that the arena special permit should continue in perpetuity, we believe the term is warranted due to the uniqueness of the site and the importance of Penn Station to the city," says Amanda Burden, the head of City Planning Department and chair of the City Planning Commission.
