TAMPA-The Hillsborough County Commission has approved incentives to help lure Amazon to the county and has scheduled a public hearing next month to provide millions of dollars in property tax exemptions.

Hillsborough commissioners agreed to offer up to $225,000 or equal to a 20% match of funds the state of Florida could put through its Qualified Target Industries Tax Refund Program. To get the full state and local credit, Amazon would have to create 375 new, higher-wage jobs at a facility expected to be located in what is now a dirt-patch along Interstate 75 in Ruskin, on the east side of Tampa Bay, according to the Jacksonville Business Journal.

The commissioners have scheduled a public hearing on July 17 on a proposal to provide $6.4 million in property-tax exemptions spread out over seven years. The exemptions, if granted, would require Amazon to undertake a $200-million capital investment in the area. See story in the Jacksonville Business Journal.
