WASHINGTON, DC-Howard University has parted ways with the Cohen Cos. on a planned town center project that was envisioned to bring 445 apartments and a grocery store to Georgia Avenue here.

University spokeswoman Kerry-Ann Hamilton stated Thursday in an e-mail that the school had terminated a ground lease with Cohen for the project.

Eric Siegel of the Cohen Cos. did not return requests for comment by the Washington Post.

“We took this action because of the failure of the developer to meet certain benchmarks under the ground lease and development agreements,” she said. Howard University officials say that it is now assessing its options. “The University's goal is to continue working towards the successful implementation and completion of the Howard Town Center,” the school stated.
