CHICAGO-The beleaguered Sacred Heart Hospital here, whose owner is facing federal charges in an alleged kickback scheme, abruptly shut down on Monday.
Melaney Arnold, a spokeswoman for the Illinois Department of Public Health, said the department received a phone call on Monday from Sacred Heart notifying the agency that the hospital at 3240 W. Franklin Boulevard, was closing.
The Department of Health requires a 90-day shutdown notification of any hospital closure. At press time it is not known if any sanctions were handed out in connection with the abrupt hospital closure on Monday, according to the Chicago Tribune.
Sacred Heart owner Edward Novak is at the center of a federal investigation that is focused on alleged kickbacks for patient referrals and a scheme to defraud Medicare and Medicaid. Six others, including five physicians, also are charged in connection with the probe. See story in the Chicago Tribune.
