MIAMI BEACH-Although its general manager is hopeful it can reopen next week, the National Hotel in Miami Beach has shut down and dismissed its staff due to its failure to pass city safety inspections.
The circa 1939 oceanfront hotel has been undergoing lengthy renovations. The city's fire marshal and building department declared the 154-room hotel unsafe following recent inspections, according to Nannette Rodriguez, a spokesperson for the city of Miami Beach.
Jacques Roy, general manager of The National Hotel, says hotel could reopen as soon as next week once it resolves the unspecified safety and building-code matters with the city, according to the Miami Herald.
State regulators posted the 74 layoffs at the National on Tuesday. In a letter to the state, The National says the layoffs that went into effect on July 18, are temporary. See story in the Miami Herald.
