TRENTON, NJ-Action on legislation aimed at overhauling how the state awards millions of dollars in tax breaks to businesses that will create or retain jobs in the Garden State is expected today.
Action will likely begin as early as today with Gov. Chris Christie issuing a conditional veto on a bill that had previously passed the Assembly and Senate. Gov. Christie is expected to remove from the bill a clause that would require incentive-induced projects created to pay prevailing or union-level wages for maintenance workers on the property, according to The Record. The governor is expected to delete a section that would give added incentives adaptive reuse projects at former hospital properties.
Supporters of the New Jersey Economic Opportunity Act say the measure will streamline the business incentive processes and improve efficiency in the program.
Due to the changes made by the governor, the bill must go back to both the Assembly and Senate for approval. The Assembly has a vote scheduled for today, while the Senate could vote on the bill on Thursday. See story in The Record.
