CHICAGO-Paris-based Montparnasse Group 56, the owner of the John Hancock Observatory, is contemplating building a tourist venue called “The Tilt” that would rival the Willis Tower's the Ledge feature.
Sources tell Crain's Chicago Business that Montparnasse Group, which acquired the observatory on the 92nd floor at the John Hancock Center for $44.2 million last year, is considering adding the Tilt as an attraction.
The Tilt would feature a glass-enclosed box that would afford strapped-in passengers a unique downward perspective of Chicago's downtown.
The Ledge at Skydeck Chicago extends out 4.3 feet from the 103rd floor of the Willis Tower. Willis Tower lost its title as the hemisphere's tallest skyscraper last month when The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat ruled that One World Trade Center in New York will be officially recognized as 1,776 feet tall—surpassing Willis Tower's 1,450 feet.
The John Hancock Center stands at 1,128 feet. See story in Crain's Chicago Business.
