MIAMI-City Commissioners are scheduled to take a preliminary vote on Thursday to begin making downtown Miami a Downtown Pedestrian Priority Zone.

The designation would begin the process that would entail widening the sidewalks, making traffic improvements, reducing clutter, and creating tree-lined canopies in the downtown district, according to the Miami Herald. The plan, which would also make right turns on red illegal, would help transform what is one of the most dangerous sections of South Florida for pedestrians, into a more safe and inviting area.

“Everything is about making downtown the primo place to work and play,” said Miami Commission Chairman Marc Sarnoff.

The zone would also require Downtown Miami to mark all crosswalks, unify street lighting, have stop lights on coordinated timers, and knock the speed limit down to 25 miles per hour. See story in the Miami Herald.
