HOUSTON-Randalls reports it is closing one of its most successful Houston locations here, which is leading to some speculation that the grocery chain may be in play for a possible sale.
The grocer, a subsidiary of Pleasanton, CA-based Safeway Inc., will close its 74,000-square-foot location in the Westchase Shopping Center in the spring of 2014. The closure was confirmed by the store's landlord, Weingarten Real Estate Investors, according to the Houston Business Journal.
There has been a sharp increase in grocers entering or expanding their operations in the Houston area of late, most recently Fiesta Mart Inc.'s launch of a new concept in Sugar Land, Aldi's expansion that has included its recent opening of its 14th area store in Webster, as well as Sprouts Farmers Market and The Fresh Market entering the supermarket sweepstakes here.
