TRENTON, NJ-A natural gas pipeline project that would traverse through 22 miles of the Pinelands has received support from the Christie administration, but had drawn the ire of four former governors of the Garden State.

Former Democratic Governors Brendan Byrne and Jim Florio, and Republican Governors Thomas Kean and Christie Whitman sent a letter this month to the chairman of the state Pinelands Commission in opposition to the project. The commission is weighing whether to allow construction of the pipeline to proceed, according to the Star-Ledger.

The pipeline would run through the Pinelands and connect to the BL England power plant in Cape May County.

In their joint letter to the Pinelands Commissions, the former governors stated, “The current proposal would compromise the integrity of the Pinelands plan and serve to encourage future development contrary to the vision the plan sets out for growth and conservation in the Pinelands.” Former Gov. Byrne signed the Pinelands Protection Act in 1979. See story in the Star-Ledger.
