AUSTIN, TX-Travis County commissioners approved a proposal on Friday that will not require companies seeking tax incentives to be required to pay federally-mandated prevailing wages.

Travis County commissioners in approving the measure rejected the recommendations of a task force that called for the incentives to be tied to the higher wage requirements. However, the proposal approved by the commissioners calls for added incentives for firms that do pay federal prevailing wages.

Federal prevailing wage laws generally set hourly wages higher than the minimum $11 per hour required by Travis County for businesses seeking tax incentives, according to the Austin Business Journal.

In October, the city of Austin approved a measure requiring businesses seeking incentives pay their workers federal prevailing wages. See story in the Austin Business Journal.
