NEW YORK CITY-The city's Landmark Preservation Commission has voiced some objections to the $150-million Empire Stores project to be built in the Dumbo section of Brooklyn.
The criticism of the project to be developed by Midtown Equities centers on designs for the development's rooftop that features a two-story glass-walled structure and large bulkhead, according to the Commercial Observer.
“I am troubled by its generic quality,” LPC Commissioner Michael Goldblum said at a hearing last week. The LPC will compose a report containing the group's issues with the project. The New York State Historic Preservation Office renders final judgment on the Empire Stores project.
Midtown Equities won the bid to redevelop the long-vacant warehouse site in the fall. The firm has since reportedly secured leases for 80% of the site, including West Elm's 150,000-square-foot lease, which was the largest in Brooklyn for the year. See story in the Commercial Observer.
