UPPER GWYNEDD, PA-As part of its continuing restructuring, pharmaceutical firm Merck & Co. reports that it will be laying off 152 workers at its facility here in Montgomery County effective Feb. 3.
The layoffs are related to the firm's sale of the marketing rights to the drug Saphris to Forest Laboratories earlier this month, according to The Inquirer. Merck filed a WARN notice (Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act) with the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry of the impending layoffs.
In early October, the Whitehouse Station, NJ-based company announced it was cutting 8,500 jobs from its global workforce. Later that month it filed a WARN notice of 500 layoffs planned for its facility in West Point, PA that are to be phased in from Dec. 23, 2013 to Jan. 5, 2014, according to the WARN notice filing.
